Golden Sun Shine Down on Me

Sun Sun Mister Golden Sun,
Please Shine Down On Me.
Our beautiful golden
sun, that warms us
and gives us light is
one of our most precious assets.
Without it, we would
have no food, no warmth,
no rain, no light to
see by, no healthy skin
and no healthy eyes,
in short, no health.
Here are some
interesting facts about the sun.
The sun is 4 1/2
billion years old.
It measures 1,392,000
km across.
If the sun was an
empty ball you could fit
one million Earths
inside it.
The sun's gravity is
28 times greater than Earth's.
It is 150 million km
away from us.
It makes up the
biggest part of our solar system
and has an average surface temperature of
6,000°C.
The Sun appears to
have been active for 4.6 billion years.
Don't worry about it
going out soon
as it has enough fuel
to go on
for another five
billion years or so.
What
is the sun made of?
Our precious sun
contains:
Hydrogen, Helium, Oxygen,
Carbon,
Nitrogen, Neon, Iron,
Silicon,
Magnesium, Sulfur, and
a few other items.
How
it makes plants -
The sun gives life to
plants
through the process of
photosynthesis.
This is the process by
which plants,
some bacteria, and
some protistans
use the energy from
sunlight to produce sugar,
which cellular
respiration converts into ATP.
ATP is considered the
"fuel"
used by all living
things.
The conversion of
unusable sunlight energy
into usable chemical
energy,
is associated with the
actions
of the green pigment
chlorophyll.
Usually this process
uses water and releases the oxygen
that we absolutely
must have to stay alive.
So the sun helps us to
have
a healthy symbiotic
relationship with plants.
How
it warms the earth
The sun warms the
surface of our planet
to about -18°C or
0°Fahrenheit.
Then the Earth
releases some of this heat
in the form of
infrared radiation.
This becomes trapped
by atmospheric greenhouse gases
and thus raises the
surface temperature to 15°C (59°F).
Health
vs. non-healthy sun - times
There is some
controversy about the sun.
Some say it is
unhealthy
and should be avoided
but others say it is
indeed healthy
and we should get
plenty of it.
Professor Michael
Holick of Boston University
School of Medicine has
written a book called The UV Advantage,
in which he argues
that we should go out
in the sun without
sunblock for about five or 10 minutes a day,
to sustain our Vitamin
D levels.
Vitamin
D
Take
it from the Sun
Vitamin D, considered
to be a hormone,
is involved in the
metabolism of
calcium and phosphorus
in the body.
When this vitamin D is
deficient in children,
rickets develop.
Vitamin D is very
important
for the bones and
tooth development.
The
Eyes have it
Also, I cannot recall
where right now,
but I read that some
cancer patients
were instructed to go
sit in the sun without eyeware
for a certain period
each day.
It was observed that
these people became better and better.
It seems that the eyes
are very receptive
to the healthy rays of
the sun
and not just for they
eyes themselves.
So
People,
Let
the SUN Shine…
In
and On!
